Mulching trees is one of the easiest things you can do to protect them and keep them healthy. While there are certain rules you want to try and follow with mulching, it’s relatively easy for anyone to do. And we think it is especially useful when fall comes around – or even better, before fall, so it really gets a chance to set in before the season hits.
Why Mulch Trees in Fall
There are multiple reasons to mulch trees in fall, including:
1. Retain moisture
A nice, thick layer of mulch is effective at retaining moisture in the soil. That’s a good thing, particularly in Utah. Trees do better if they are watered slower and deeper. On bare soil, water will evaporate faster than it will under a layer of mulch.
2. Prevent erosion
Mulch can help keep soil in place around the roots of a tree. Most tree roots are healthier if they are not exposed to the open air. Sometimes, though, weather and circumstance can cause erosion and leave roots exposed. But if you have enough mulch, erosion is much less likely to happen.
3. Weed reduction
A couple of inches of mulch is usually enough to keep down most weeds. Since weeds can compete with the tree for nutrients and moisture, it’s a good idea to prevent their growth when you can. The nice thing about mulch is that it is effective at keeping weeds down while also being pesticide-free.
4. Keeps soil warmer longer
Mulch is an effective insulator. As the weather gets colder, mulch can help retain some heat in the soil. That will allow the tree to grow for a little longer and be a little stronger when the cold ramps up.
Avoid Too Much Mulch!
Mulch is a good thing – but there is such thing as too much of a good thing. Keep the mulch around your tree to a depth of 2 to 4 inches and no more. Also, keep the mulch away from the base of the tree by at least a few inches. That will help avoid mold growth or other unwanted intruders between the mulch and the tree.
