Spring is an exciting time for homeowners because you have so much new growth to look forward to. As the weather warms, you will see lots of greenery, growth, and buds. But it’s still important to protect your trees in spring. There are risks, like late freezes and insect infestations, that you should take steps to insulate your trees from.
Protect Your Trees in Spring – Helpful Tips
To get the most out of your trees this spring and on into summer, there are a few things we recommend. These include:
1. Amend your soil.
Soil amendments, like phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium, take time to spread out through the soil. As winter comes to an end, it’s a great time to start applying these amendments. If you are not sure what to add to your soil, consider getting a soil test. Once you know exactly what the soil already has, you can decide what things you want to add based on your desired outcomes.
2. Apply insecticides according to instructions.
A lot of insecticides have specific instructions that will ensure they work as intended. For example, dormant oil needs to be applied during specific temperature ranges to work properly. If you apply it too early, you won’t get the effects you are expecting. Read instructions carefully and follow them to the letter.
3. Cover sensitive trees if you expect a late freeze.
You can cover trees in dry burlap bags, plastic, or other coverings to protect them if the weather is going to be below freezing. This takes a little time and effort, but it’s much better than just waiting to see if the tree sustains damage.
4. Make sure trees are properly mulched.
A nice, thick layer of mulch is great for your trees year-round. You may have already applied mulch in the fall and still have plenty surrounding your trees. But if you didn’t get around to mulching in the fall, add some now.
5. Get a consultation from your tree experts.
